A Little Less Conversation, A Little More Action: Why AI in Aviation ERP Isn’t Just a Feature

Why the aviation aftermarket needs to move past the “shiny assistant” and build AI into the core of how we work. 

If you’ve been paying attention to the aviation software market lately, you’ve likely noticed a trend. Legacy platforms are rushing to announce their new “AI Assistants.” We are seeing a wave of conversational interfaces, chatbots, and copilots being embedded into day-to-day workflows. 

The narrative being pushed is that having an AI chat window next to your work is the future of aviation maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO). But as we build Aviate—from the ground up, to be the best-in-class Aviation ERP—we believe it’s time for a little less conversation, and a little more action. 

The truth is, AI in aviation has to be much more than a chat prompt. 

The “Shiny Assistant” Trap 

When the market narrative centers entirely on the assistant layer, it misses the operational reality of our industry. In a fast-paced FBO, a busy MRO hangar, or a high-volume aircraft parts sales floor, professionals don’t have the time to sit and “chat” with their ERP. Aviation doesn’t need a conversational partner; it needs operational execution. 

If an aircraft is AOG (Aircraft on Ground), a procurement manager doesn’t need a chatbot to tell them they are out of a critical component, nor do they want to spend time typing out prompts asking for alternatives. They need a system that has already done the heavy lifting before they even open the screen. 

Surfacing Action, Leaving the Decision to the Human 

Instead of waiting for a conversation to start, true AI in aviation performs exhaustive background work. It continuously monitors the supply troubleshooting chain, identifies alternative rotatable parts, and cross-references technical manuals for compatibility.  

Crucially, the AI does not make the final call. We do not believe in autonomous AI running the show. Instead, AI presents these fully synthesized options to the procurement manager, pre-staging the purchase order so a human expert can make a rapid, highly informed decision. AI accelerates the human by eliminating the busywork; it doesn’t replace them or force them into a dialogue. 

The Anatomy of Trust in Aviation AI 

This brings up the most important question: Why should that procurement manager trust the AI’s recommendation without a lengthy back-and-forth? 

In aviation, where safety and compliance are paramount, “black-box” AI is completely useless. An operator cannot sign off on an AI’s guess. Trust in software is built entirely on traceability and transparency.  

When Aviate’s operating model surfaces a recommendation—whether it’s a part alternate or a maintenance routing suggestion—it shows its work. It links directly to the specific page in the IPC or Maintenance Manual. It highlights the relevant Airworthiness Directives or Service Bulletins. It shows the vendor’s historical reliability metrics. The AI performs the multi-system research in milliseconds, but the human retains absolute authority, backed by transparent, verifiable evidence. 

From Systems of Record to Systems of Action 

This is why AI in an Aviation ERP isn’t an add-on feature or a chat UI. It is an entirely new operating model. 

For decades, aviation software has functioned as a System of Record. You do the work, and then you log it into the ERP. The conversational AI assistants being rolled out today largely sit on top of these systems, just helping users query historical data a bit faster. 

At Aviate, we are building a System of Action. To make AI an operating model, three things must be true: 

  1. Unified Data: You cannot have intelligent insights if your purchasing history, shop schedule, and financial ledgers live in siloed architectures. AI requires a single, unified data model to understand the full context of the business. 
  1. Embedded Workflows: AI shouldn’t be a separate window you open or a bot you talk to. It should be invisible, embedded directly into the workflow—surfacing pricing recommendations for part sales based on market scarcity, preparing optimal staging for work orders, or alerting shift supervisors to maintenance bottlenecks before they impact turnaround time (TAT). 
  1. Measurable Outcomes: We aren’t measuring success by how many messages a user sent to an AI assistant. We measure it by business outcomes: reduced AOG times, higher inventory turns, faster technician onboarding, and improved compliance accuracy. 



Building for the Future with Aviate 

The narrative being pushed by the rest of the market is that AI is here to “assist” you in talking to their complex software. We believe your software shouldn’t be so complex that you need a chatbot to navigate it.  

AI shouldn’t just summarize your data. It should do the rigorous background work required to tee up the critical decisions your team makes every day. It’s time for a little less conversation, and a lot more action. By shifting the focus away from the assistant layer and toward unified data, verifiable trust, and human enablement, we are turning AI into the operating model that will power the future of the aviation aftermarket.
